Industrial water treatment is used to optimize most water-based industrial processes, such as: heating, cooling, processing, cleaning and rinsing, so that operating costs and risks are reduced.

A boiler is used to heat or vaporize water for use in various processes including water heating, central heating, boiler-based power generation, cooking, and sanitation. Without the proper water treatment boilers can scale up or corrode, and these deposits will mean more fuel is needed to heat the same amount of water. In many cases, effluent water from one process might be perfectly suitable for reuse in another process somewhere else on site. With the proper treatment, a significant proportion of industrial on-site waste water might be reusable. This can save money in three ways: lower charges for lower water consumption, lower charges for the smaller volume of effluent water discharged and lower energy costs due to the recovery of heat in recycled water.

A cooling tower is a heat rejection device which rejects waste heat to the atmosphere through the cooling of a water stream to a lower temperature. Common applications include cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries, petrochemical and other chemical plants, thermal power stations and HVAC systems for cooling buildings. Poor water treatment lets water interact with the surfaces of pipes and vessels which contain it. Cooling towers can scale up and corrode, but left untreated, the warm, dirty water they contain will encourage bacteria to grow. If water treatment is left neglected, it can cause defective products and domestic water can become unsafe to drink.
